Grapefruits are in-season right now in the sunny Southeast and prices are excellent. You can find ripe, juicy grapefruits in supermarkets all over the country or if you’re lucky enough to live in Texas, Florida, California, or Arizona, you can buy them fresh from the tree at your local farmer’s market...or pick one off the tree in your own backyard. (I’m envious!)
To me, fresh fruit is like Nature’s candy counter, and grapefruit is the healthy equivalent of a Sweet Tart. It has a lot of uses in breakfast drinks, salads, and even some of the dessert recipes I created for my book Raw for Dessert. The important thing about grapefruits...about all the ingredients you use in raw food recipes, actually...is that you pick items that are fresh, ripe, and as close to perfection as you can find.
Selecting the ‘perfect’ grapefruit isn’t difficult as long as you know what you’re looking for. Do you? I’ve got some tips that I think will demystify the process for you.
Look for a grapefruit that is ‘heavy for its size.’ Citrus fruits that are lightweight are generally older and have begun to lose their juice. Push in at both ends (gently!). If the fruit gives slightly, it should be juicy and delicious. And give a sniff to the stem end. The more grapefruit-y it smells, the riper the fruit is likely to be.
This February 14th, a raw food salad made with sweet-tart grapefruit and avocado could make your Valentine pucker up...in a good way. It’s a dish that is quite simple to make and utterly delicious to eat. Men, in particular, like its bold flavors.

And next time, I’ll tell you about a salad dressing that’s perfect for men who want to put their wives or girlfriends on a pedestal for Valentine’s Day.
